FireAvert is a small unit that installs to the back of a stove. The device, $149, will automatically shut off a stove when it detects smoke. A 30 second delay allows homeowners to clear smoke or shut off a smoke detector in case they simply burned the grilled cheese sandwich. (The National Fire Protection Association reports that U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 162,400 fires each year involving cooking equipment.)
